Olatunde Success on leading NDPA 2023 compliance at SAW Technologies: DPIAs for cross-border processors, privacy-by-design architecture, NDPC registration, and why data protection is a market advantage for Nigerian fintech.
When the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 landed, most founders I know filed it under something legal will handle. I took the opposite view. At SAW Technologies, NDPA compliance is a product decision I own as CEO, because in fintech the product is trust, and the NDPA is the state telling you what trustworthy looks like.
What compliance actually looks like in practice
Privacy by design: AES-256-GCM field-level encryption for BVN and NIN, role-based access control, and append-only audit logs are architecture, not policy documents.
Data minimization and retention: we collect what a feature needs, we document how long we keep it, and deletion is a real code path, not a support ticket.
DPIAs for cross-border transfers: every third-party processor we touch, including SafeHaven MFB, Paystack, Sudo Africa, and Prembly, is covered by a documented impact assessment, including US-hosted cloud infrastructure.
NDPC registration: SAW Technologies’ Data Controller/Processor registration, processing documentation, and DPO designation are managed as a first-class workstream.
Compliance reviews find real bugs
When we audited a bank’s digital channels during a transformation proposal for Cooperative Mortgage Bank, the compliance lens surfaced concrete vulnerabilities: insecure form data collection, unsigned APK distribution, broken authentication flows. None of those were abstract legal risks. They were exploitable engineering defects that a data-protection review caught before an attacker did.
The advantage nobody prices in
Partners diligence you. Banks diligence you. Enterprise customers diligence you. Walking into those rooms with DPIAs written, encryption verifiable, and NDPC registration in motion turns compliance from a cost centre into the fastest sales document you own. Regulation rewards the prepared, and in Nigerian fintech, prepared is still a differentiator.
